Twelve year old Marie is a leader among the popular black girls in Chauncey, Ohio. She isn't looking for a friend when Lena bright a white girl appears in school. They have one thing in common they both have lost their mothers, they know how to kip a secret. One of the biggest secret is that one them is that her dad abuse. So Lena needs to protect herself and her younger sister from their father. One day Lena didn't when to school for a few days, Marie when to her house but she was not there later on Lena call Marie and said that they are going to run away because her dad is touching Lena's little sister.Marie couldn't stop them from running away. Now, she is asking her self is they are okay,why good thing come for a while and then goes away.
